Abstract

Classification of knowledge can be understood as the division or sorting of knowledge to determine the type or group of knowledge based on certain benchmarks. al-Ghazali philosophically classifies science into shar'iyyah science and 'aqliyyah science. By al-Ghazali this last science is also known as the science of ghair shar'iyyah. The use of the term ghair by al-Ghazali for intellectual science, means that for him the shar'iyyah science is more important and acts more as a basis for naming every other science, even though the two cannot be separated. Al-Ghazali's classification of knowledge is considered important, because he laid the first philosophical foundation for the theory of knowledge that came from God based on benefit values. He argues that intuitive knowledge (ma'rifah) that comes from Allah directly to a person is true knowledge. With this knowledge a servant can achieve happiness in the world and the hereafter.
